It shows every modelled glacier in Kyrgyzstan drawn with its real mapped outline as a sheet of ice on a 3D relief model, from 2020 to 2100. As the years run, each glacier thins to the share of its year-2000 area that global glacier models keep, and turns into a dark scar in the year the models say it is effectively gone. ### How many glaciers are on the map? 7,336 glaciers are modelled and animated. The pale underlay shows all 11,181 outlines in the Randolph Glacier Inventory 7.0 whose centre lies in Kyrgyzstan, about 5,800 km², including roughly 4,000 small glaciers the models did not run on. ### Where do the glacier projections come from? From Van Tricht and colleagues (2025, Nature Climate Change, doi:10.1038/s41558-025-02513-9). They ran three global glacier models — GloGEM, OGGM and PyGEM — with many CMIP6 climate model runs and reported, for every glacier on Earth, the median year in which it is effectively gone. KG Labs took the glaciers whose centre lies in Kyrgyzstan and reproduced the published years exactly. ### What do the warming levels mean? A warming level is the rise in global mean temperature over 2071–2100 above pre-industrial, as simulated by each CMIP6 climate model run. Each level pools the runs falling in a band: +1.5 °C covers 1.1–1.6 °C, +2.0 °C covers 1.5–2.45 °C, +2.7 °C covers 2.2–3.4 °C and +4.0 °C covers 3.7–4.4 °C. They come from climate models, not from satellite or ERA5 observations. ### What is the difference between published years and corrected years? Published years come from the study authors' released code. KG Labs found a defect in that code: a rule meant to act at 1% of the initial ice volume acts at about 3.25%, which makes the published extinction years early. The corrected years are the KG Labs recomputation with that fix, which moves the median year about three years later. The map lets you switch between the two. ### How is KG Labs calibrating these global models for Kyrgyzstan? The map shows global model runs driven by global climate and glacier data. KG Labs is fine-tuning their calibration for Kyrgyzstan and for the other high-mountain countries of the Pan-Third Pole, which share the same ranges and the same gaps in measurement. The work draws on four kinds of evidence: real-time data links that carry readings out of valleys with no mobile coverage (LoRaWAN, Wi-Fi HaLow, satellite IoT); low-power ground stations for precipitation, air and ground temperature, water level, soil moisture and snow; geospatial data from Sentinel-1 and -2, Landsat, elevation models, glacier and lake inventories and recovered Soviet-era catalogues; and Earth-observation, weather and time-series AI models, each tested against Kyrgyz observations and a simple baseline before it is used. The aim is glacier, water and hazard projections that hold up against measurements in Kyrgyzstan and across the Pan-Third Pole, not only against global averages. ### What are the layers on the map? Four layers sit on one relief model: the modelled glaciers, coloured by their middle elevation and thinned by remaining area; the pale Randolph Glacier Inventory 7.0 outlines; the permafrost elevation band, ochre for 3,200–3,500 m and rust above 3,500 m; and terrain with lakes larger than 1 km² — Issyk-Kul, Son-Kul, Chatyr-Kul, Toktogul and others — in natural colour from cloud-free Sentinel-2 imagery. ### What is the permafrost band based on? On field assessments in the Ala-Archa valley, which found patchy permafrost between 3,200 and 3,500 m and continuous permafrost above 3,500 m. It is an elevation band drawn from those studies, not a map of where permafrost has actually been found. ### How old are the glacier outlines? The Randolph Glacier Inventory 7.0 was released in 2023 but describes glaciers around the year 2000, the common starting point for glacier models. Its Kyrgyz outlines were traced from satellite images taken between 1994 and 2008, with three quarters of the ice area coming from 2002 imagery. ### What climate and glacier data does KG Labs hold for Kyrgyzstan? As of 7 October 2026: national data files for 11,481 glaciers, 2,592 tracked glacial lakes, 929,924 lake-weeks of satellite measurements and reconstructed lake states, 1,769 recorded floods, mudflows, outbursts and landslides from 1846 to 2026, and 152,143 river discharge observations from 116 stations. A station at Adygene sends environmental readings every 10 minutes, all year, over LoRaWAN and cellular networks. ### How do I work with KG Labs on this? KG Labs Public Foundation, based in Bishkek, looks for partners in field monitoring, sensor networks, data sharing and research: government agencies, universities, telecom operators, donors and international programmes.
