The Pitch Bishkek 2015: Asylbek Abdikarimov to Startup Nations Summit Monterrey

The Pitch Bishkek: Kyrgyzstan Selects Its Representative for the Startup Nations Summit

On September 22, 2015, a pitch competition at a venue in Bishkek selected the Kyrgyz startup that would travel to Monterrey, Mexico and compete at the global finals of The Pitch — a competition run through the Startup Nations network, which by then counted KG Labs among its member organizations. The event was the first time Kyrgyzstan sent a representative to a Startup Nations competition, and the result carried stakes that went beyond a single prize.

Three judges evaluated the pitches: Kumar Bekboltov, a University of California Berkeley graduate focused on social entrepreneurship; George Parra, an experienced entrepreneur based in California; and Kainar Kamalov, an MIT graduate with experience at startups including Zynga and Locu. Their combined background — academic, operational, and technical — reflected the kind of international audience the winner would face in Mexico.

Format and What Was Being Competed For

The Pitch was a straightforward pitch competition: each startup presented in English, in front of a panel of judges, in a format designed to test persuasive clarity rather than technical depth alone. The winner would receive a paid trip to Monterrey for Global Entrepreneurship Week and the Startup Nations Summit, taking place November 21–26. There, they would compete in the global semifinals alongside representatives from other Startup Nations member countries, with six finalist startups presenting at the Summit Gala.

The competition’s English-language requirement was deliberate: it reflected the actual conditions of the global finals and gave participants practice in presenting to an international audience rather than a domestic one. The judging criteria, documented in the archive, covered pitch structure, audience capture, and the ability to sell a startup idea to an investor unfamiliar with the local context.

The Winner and What Followed

The winner was Asylbek Abdikarimov, who represented Kyrgyzstan at the Startup Nations Summit in November 2015. KG Labs and Asylbek traveled together to events held in both Mexico City and Monterrey. At Cintermex — the convention center running alongside INCmty activities — the Startup Nations Global Pitch took place on November 20. US Ambassador David Thorne addressed the conference, speaking about why governments need to support entrepreneurs.

The Summit was KG Labs’ first major international representation event — the first time Kyrgyzstan was formally present at a Startup Nations gathering. The decision to participate, and to send a locally selected winner rather than a delegate, positioned KG Labs as an organization operating at the level of national ecosystem representation, not just local event programming.

What The Pitch Was Part Of

KG Labs had joined the Startup Nations league in May 2015, a few months before organizing this competition. The Startup Nations network — a global network of national startup ecosystem organizations — uses The Pitch as one mechanism for connecting emerging-market startups to capital and to each other. KG Labs’ rapid progression from joining the network in May to sending a winner to the global finals in November reflected the pace at which it was building its international connections in the organization’s first year.

What the competition revealed about Bishkek’s startup landscape at the time was harder to assess from a single event. The judges’ caliber — MIT, Berkeley, California — set a standard that the finalists had to meet. That a local startup was selected and did compete at the global level was one data point. What the other pitches looked like, and where the competing startups went afterward, would take longer to trace.
